“Russell risks more because he’s younger” : Gerhard Berger makes bold comparison between Lewis Hamilton and George Russell

With the ongoing debate about whether Lewis Hamilton would continue his stint as a Mercedes driver, the motorsport enthusiasts have been speculating all kinds of theories related to the 8-time World Champion. With Lewis’ recent performance in Imola in mind, many fans are of the opinion that the 37-year-old is afraid to take more risks although his young teammate George Russell has risen up to the occasion and has races fearlessly to get a P4 finish in the Main Race.

Now, former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger has weighed in on this topic about Mercedes’ performance in the first few races of the new 2022 F1 season in his recent interview with Auto Bild. According to the F1 veteran, it makes no sense to him as to why Lewis Hamilton would Lewis would not take more risks to improve his position in the grid.

The McLaren and Ferrari alumnus has been witness to Lewis Hamilton’s great skills and his aggressive side, but now, he feels like the British racer is not giving it his all because his Mercedes is almost always racing outside the points this year. Berger believes, if Mercedes comes to the front again, Lewis will take more risks and try to take on his rivals like Verstappen and Leclerc.

While we are four races into the F1 2022 Championship, it is quite apparent that while Ferrari have made a near-perfect car, Red Bull have upgraded theirs to increase their performance too. But on the other hand, Mercedes has failed to deliver a car that matches its rivals in both speed and reliability issues. All this has hindered Lewis Hamilton from claiming a top position in the Drivers’ Championship standings. Yet, George Russell, Hamilton’s teammate, has made quite good progress in his first year as a Merc driver.

Speaking of Mercedes’ performance, Berger said, “It’s quite simple: Russell risks more because he’s younger. If Lewis were fighting for victories, he would also drive more with the knife between his teeth.”

He further said, “But when it comes to 13th place, that understandably no longer makes sense for him.”
