Audi will enter Formula 1 in 2026 after acquiring the Sauber F1 team. The German carmaker has been adamant about signing an experienced driver for its debut season in the sport. Previously, rumors had floated around Carlos Sainz being in talks with the auto giant. Now, it has been reported that Nico Hulkenberg might be the prime target for Audi.
Hulkenberg had confirmed earlier this year that Sauber wanted to sign him for 2024. However, the Haas F1 team decided to take an option on the German’s contract for next season. Subsequently, this closed the door for the 36-year-old for a move to the Swiss team. Moreover, reports that emerged that Audi was still interested in hiring Nico Hulkenberg.
The 36-year-old has established himself as a consistent driver who can bring in decent results. As such, Audi is still eyeing the former Le Mans winner to lead the team’s efforts. The nationality of the Haas driver is a bonus for the German carmaker. Thus, fans shouldn’t be surprised if Nico Hulkenberg decides to switch to Sauber soon.
Nico Hulkenberg exceeded expectations in 2023
The Haas F1 team faced criticism for replacing Mick Schumacher with Nico Hulkenberg this year. However, the German driver delivered on the faith put by the American team. Hulkenberg managed to outpace teammate Kevin Magnussen during the 2023 season. Subsequently, the 36-year-old received praise from the F1 paddock.
Hulkenberg scored the majority of points for Haas this season. The German driver even out-qualified Magnussen 15-7 this year. Certainly, this has put pressure on the Danish driver who had a comfortable lead over Mick Schumacher last season. Although, Kevin Magnussen has given some decent drives for his team.
However, the major limiting factor for Haas was the woeful race pace this season. This forced Hulkenberg and Magnussen to be sitting ducks in races as they fell down the pecking order. As such, the American team will be looking to improve on this major weakness next year.
