After a momentous career, Sebastian Vettel will retire at the end of the season. The German won four world championships with Red Bull – and will end his career with (at least) 53 wins, 57 pole positions, and 122 podiums. He came rather close two other times to a world championship – but alas, no cigar.

Vettel is undoubtedly one of the greatest of his generation – and of all time, however, in his current situation at Aston Martin, he was in a very uncompetitive car, and even though he is past his prime, he certainly deserves better than that. But the team and he have rarely had any occasion for joy this season, as they sit 9th in the Constructor Standings, only ahead of Williams.

Being a former world champion and being stuck in a car that is nowhere near even the midfield is obviously not an ideal situation for Vettel, and it would make sense if he lost his love for the sport a bit due to that. After a while, there are just many more important things in your life than Formula 1 – such as your family.

Hans-Joachim Stuck on Vettel’s retirement: “It comes at the right time for him”

In an interview with Eurosport, Hans-Joachim Stuck, who had previously raced in Formula 1 in the 70s with teams like Brabham and March, discussed the topic of Vettel’s retirement, among many others. On being asked about Vettel’s decision to retire by the interviewer, Stuck said:

“Of course, you have to respect his decision and I think it comes at the right time for him. Vettel has won four world championships and is an absolute top driver, but he is no longer in a winning car. His decision to quit is understandable. Now the time has come when he can focus on his family, and other important things.”

The interviewer then asked where Vettel stands in the history of Formula 1, and Stuck’s reply was clear: among the greatest of all time, more specifically, among the 6 greatest. He said: “In my list, he is definitely one of the top 6 best drivers in history. After everything he has done, he is definitely in line with Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Jackie Stewart, Lewis Hamilton and also Max Verstappen.”

As for the last few races, Stuck thinks that people should not expect anything extraordinary from Vettel, considering the car that he is in: “He no longer has to prove anything to anyone. He won’t win another race unless something out of the ordinary happens. But don’t expect too much either, because he doesn’t have a winning car. Therefore, he cannot build on his earlier successes. And that’s a shame.”

Sebastian Vettel is definitely one of the best of all time – and there will likely be more than a few eyes shedding tears in the final race of the season. He’s touched the hearts of millions, not only with his driving, but with his personality and activism as well, and will be remembered in the history books as one of the greatest to ever do it.
