Sebastian Vettel will retire at the end of the season, after what has been an incredibly storied career. The German won four world championships in a row – all with Red Bull, taking home a total of 53 wins in his career. It was an incredible period of dominance, culminating in 2013, when Vettel won 13 races, including winning 9 in a row.

Unfortunately for him, his period of dominance came to an end with the start of the hybrid era. After a disappointing year at Red Bull, Vettel went to Ferrari in 2015, hoping to create an era like his hero Michael Schumacher had. It was not to be, and Vettel did not win any more championships, despite coming close on two occasions.

2020 was his final year at Ferrari, where he was beaten very comprehensively by his teammate, Charles Leclerc, to whom he had also lost in 2019. Ferrari chose not to continue with him for 2021, and he then went to Aston Martin. The first season was ‘okay’, but the second had been anything but. The car is just not good enough, and as a former world champion, that must sting.

Norbert Vettel will be in attendance in Monza again

Sebastian Vettel’s father, Norbert, has barely missed a race that Vettel has competed in, and has always been by his son’s side in support. In an interview with RTL, he gave his thoughts on his son’s retirement announcement:

He said: “It’s a shame, but I understand him. It was an incredible career for my son and the low point was Austria. It hurt him so much to drive around at the end of the field and that accelerated this thought.”

Austria was undoubtedly a tough weekend for Vettel. In the sprint race, Alex Albon touched his tires, and sent him into the gravel, while during the race, Pierre Gasly and he collided, which sent him into the gravel, and sent a 5-second penalty Gasly’s way. Vettel had complained on the radio saying “What is wrong with these people…” following the collision.

Norbert Vettel says that he will be attending a race once again, probably in Monza: “I definitely want to witness one more race. I’ll probably choose Monza because that’s where he got his first F1 win with Toro Rosso. That’s where his great career as a four-time world champion began.”

The Italian Grand Prix in 2008 was Sebastian Vettel’s first-ever win. Vettel took pole position and won the race by more than a 12 seconds difference from second-place Heikki Kovalainen. Vettel would win in Monza two more times, in 2011, and 2013, but it is unfortunate that he could not win there with Ferrari. It was Toro Rosso’s first and last victory until 12 years later in Monza once again, when Pierre Gasly won.
