Sergio Perez, the Red Bull driver, has managed a third-place finish at the Red Bull ring, but after the race, he has let his frustrations known regarding the track-limits rule that was in play during the whole Austrian weekend. He believes the track limits rule was too extreme and has deemed it an absolute joke.
During the recently concluded Austrian GP, several drivers were given time penalties for exceeding the track limits during the race. While several F1 drivers saw their names taken by the race officials, Sergio Perez’s tussle with the rule started from the money he hit the Red Bull Ring. From Friday onward, he struggled and even paid the price for it during qualifying.
While summarising the whole event after the race, he said, “I’m really happy. It’s been a very difficult weekend for me personally, and physically. I have been really, really weak. I was sick on Thursday. So, it hasn’t been an easy weekend. High fevers, no sleep during the weekend. So, a great recovery from the team, fantastic strategy, and we had great pace.”
It’s been a bit of a rough patch for me. So, hopefully, we are back, and we can keep those positions here now. Moreover, while shedding light on the track limits rule, he told Skysports, “I think the track limits were a joke this weekend.” Perez wants to forget the Austrian weekend as soon as possible.
Sergio Perez finished second after starting the Austrian GP from P15
While Sergio Perez has deemed his three days at the Austrian GP extremely tough, he put in a mega drive during the main race to finish in the third position. Perez, despite starting the race from a disadvantageous P15 on the gird, was able to storm his way through the midfield and toward the north end of the grid.
However, Max Verstappen has scored yet another victory and has put more distance between himself and the chasing pack in the Drivers Championship. As things stand, the Dutchman sits comfortably at the top with 229 points, whereas Perez is still stuck in second with only 148 points to his name.
With the 2023 season approaching its midway point in a couple of races, it is high time for the 33-year-old to at least start putting in consistent performances. Otherwise, Max Verstappen would secure the Championship with several races remaining on the F1 calendar. Next up is the British Grand Prix; it will be an extremely crucial race for Sergio Perez.
