Sergio Perez was fighting for second in the championship in Brazil against Charles Leclerc in 2022. In 2023, Perez has found himself in the same predicament, as Lewis Hamilton is closing in at only 20 points behind, and Perez is trying to regain his competitive edge. Max Verstappen has already won the world championship, and Sergio Perez looks to complete Red Bull’s first-ever 1-2 finish.

In the 2022 Brazilian GP, Max Verstappen knew that Perez needed valuable points in Brazil before going into the final race at Abu Dhabi. However, Verstappen refused to let his teammate by for 6th place. The Dutchman considered it ‘revenge’ for Sergio Perez crashing in Monaco earlier in the year, securing the pole for himself. However, Perez has said that he does not believe this will occur again, saying that Verstappen will surely aid the Mexican driver in a battle should such a situation arise.

We haven't thought about it, but I think if the situation arises, I'm sure I would have support from Max.

Verstappen replied, commenting that it shouldn’t always be up to him to supply Perez with help for points, but also said that his teammate can manage well on his own due to the supreme pace of the RB19. Verstappen said that he would prefer not to get into a situation where he would have to affect his race to help Sergio.

I’m a sportsman and I know how this goes, with the passion I live my career, and yeah just put it behind me and hold my head high because I gave my best and I’m proud of that. Now looking forward for the last three races.

Perez has had only two retirements in the whole season and currently stands second in the Driver’s standings as Hamilton looks to change that. Perez has never finished higher than 3rd in the driver’s championship, achieving the result in 2022.

Red Bull’s primary rivals in the past few races, Mercedes and McLaren, are particularly strong in Brazil. Mercedes’ last 1-2 finish was at Interlagos in 2022, with Russell achieving the team’s first win since 2021 and his maiden win.
