F1 is growing at an exponential rate, and Sergio Perez‘s father, Antonio Pérez has made it known that Cancun in Mexico could soon hold a full-fledged F1 Grand Prix weekend. If this certainly happens to be the case, then Mexico will have two races on the upcoming F1 calendars.

Antonio Perez is very optimistic about having an F1 race at the Mexican resort of Cancun. Moreover, he has even revealed that the FIA and F1 are also on board and are willing to work in order to make it happen. Rumors around Cancun have been circulating since 2021, and the goal is to stage a race at the picturesque beachside town of Cancun.

While shedding light on the same, Parez senior said, “Last week I had a meeting with Mexican businessmen, we have already prepared the letters of intent, and I think we will be presenting it in mid-July, where it will be, the measurements of the track, to have everything ready and to start the work. The most important part is that the FIA and Formula 1 have already accepted it, they opened the doors for me. As of today, it is 60 percent likely to happen.”

Looking at what Antonio Perez has said about the potential of staging a race in Cancun, it seems the interested parties are very serious about the project. Mexico wants to stage another race, and if everything goes as planned this year, then who knows, Cancun might be seen alongside Mexico City on the future F1 calendars.

Cancun GP will not affect the future prospects of Mexico City GP

While Cancun could potentially be seen on the F1 calendar soon, it is a common belief that it will in no way affect the place of the Mexico City GP on the future calendars of the sport. Mexico City has been on the F1 calendar for several years and faces no threat from Cancun, even if a race there becomes a reality.

Moreover, if Cancun is seen on the upcoming F1 calendars, then North America will have a total of six Grand Prix next year. This is great news as far as the people of North America are concerned. However, there are only 24 slots to fill on an F1 Grand Prix calendar.

Many of the current circuits have a long-term deal in place with F1 regarding the staging of Grand Prix events. Considering this fact, if Cancun gets a slot in the upcoming years, it would be fascinating to see which circuits would get axed.
