Sergio Perez was projected to be a title contender at the start of the season. The Mexican was in very good form, closing down to just six points between him and Max Verstappen after his win in Azerbaijan. But, his steep drop in form from Monaco resulted in a massive 118-point trail from Verstappen. As the driver showed some progress in Hungary by finishing P3, Red Bull chief Helmut Marko has spoken about Perez’s form.
Helmut Marko said that Perez had awakened from his “dream” of winning the championship. This will enable him to focus on raising his performance. He said that with Verstappen being underrated for his capabilities, it was “impossible” for Perez to surpass him. But at the same time, Marko also made it clear that as long as Perez finishes second in the driver standings, his place with Red Bull is safe.
“Perez has woken up from his dream of winning the world championship. Maybe that will help him to concentrate again on delivering the best possible performance. We have a contract with Perez until the end of 2024. He’s second in the world championship – what need do we have to act?,” Marko told Autosport-Total.com

Helmut Marko reveals his perfect teammate for Max Verstappen

Amidst rumors regarding the uncertainty of Sergio Perez retaining his Red Bull seat, Red Bull chief Helmut Marko has revealed who he thinks would be the perfect teammate for Max Verstappen. Surprisingly, the teammate is a combination of two drivers.
According to Marko, Perez’s only weak point is his one-lap pace. It has been evident that Perez struggles in qualifying as he failed to get out of Q1 for five consecutive races before Hungary. If Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg could race on Saturday and Perez on Sunday, Marko says that they both would form the ideal duo to be teammates with Verstappen. He said, “That’s the right thought. The two would be the perfect qualifying and race combination.”
The Austrian also agrees that Perez is dealing with the toughest teammate on the track. Verstappen’s form has been terrific throughout the season and would certainly be pressurizing for his teammate.
Pere will start P3 on Sunday in Belgium, three places ahead of Verstappen on P6. While it is being speculated that Verstappen won’t take more than a lap to get to the first position, it remains to be seen how well Perez can take advantage of this situation.
