The two Formula 1 veterans Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso were in a thrilling battle for the third spot in the Brazilian GP. Both the drivers finished very close to each other with a minute gap of almost five-thousandth of a second. Alonso overtook Perez and clung onto the third spot in the end.
In the post-race interview, the Mexican applauded the Spaniard for his amazing and fair racing. Perez also added that despite Alonso playing some tricks, he’s always racing fairly. Additionally, Checo commented that the podium for Fernando Alonso was ‘well deserved’.
I have to say well done to Fernando, because it was great fight. Very fair racing. You know that Fernando will always try to play any game, but he will always be fair. I think whoever got the podium was well-deserved, and he got it.Perez said, as reported by motorsport.com
The Red Bull’s Mexican driver further said:
I don't think I could have done anything differently. I would have liked to be on the podium, it hurts losing, but I'm happy for Fernando because he had a great race.
When asked about missing the podium and what he could have changed, Checo said there wasn’t much he could do differently to win. He’s 33 years old and losing the podium stung. However, he’s happy for Alonso’s success.
Sergio Perez claimed that he finally understood what he was doing wrong
Sergio Perez faced a series of unfortunate events at the Qatar GP and the Brazilian GP consecutively. Despite the missed podium and a lackluster performance in the past races, Perez claimed that he finally understood what went wrong in the past few races.
The veteran later added that the team was making great progress over the recent weekends. Perez claimed that they were unable to string together good sessions but, it was a matter of time before greater results would come for the Milton Keynes-based team.
Over the past few weekends, Sergio Perez has indeed shown good improvements in terms of his pace. The Mexican finally feels comfortable enough in the championship table as the lead to Lewis Hamilton has been extended to over 32 points. With just two more races left, Perez looks hopeful of a great P2 finish in the drivers’ championship.
