The Singapore GP weekend is underway. This iconic street race was the first night GP in the sport’s history. Over the years, the city-state has given fans with some of the most exciting races. However, this weekend’s first free practice was interrupted by what is a unique part of the entire weekend at the Marina Bay Circuit, a lizard in the middle of the track.
During FP1 on Friday in Singapore, a lizard came out on track. Drivers had to avoid the animal as they tried to go around the circuit. Max Verstappen notified his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, or GP regarding this instance. The Red Bull race engineer reminded the Dutchman about his former lizard friend on the same track 7 years ago.
The two-time world champion stated on the team radio, “There’s a lizard again on the track. A smaller one this time.” GP replied, “OK understood, maybe Godzilla’s son.” Godzilla was the name given to the lizard that was spotted during the 2016 Singapore GP weekend. Verstappen agreed with his race engineer and mentioned that this could certainly be the case. The Dutchman said, “I mean it makes sense ha!”

The regular occurrence of lizards on the track has become a concern for drivers this weekend. Max Verstappen went as far as complaining about the stewards as they could not stop the animal from entering the track during the session. The reigning world champion said, “Can these marshals not pay attention to this animal? Jesus Christ.”
While other drivers, including Yuki Tsunoda and George Russell, notified their respective teams about the constant appearances of the reptile. A total of three yellow flags were called during the session due to lizards. On the other hand, Charles Leclerc was amused by the animal entering the track throughout Free Practice. Certainly, the sight of lizards on an F1 track is rather amusing for fans and drivers alike. However, this needs to stop for the safety of drivers and animals. A sudden appearance of a reptile might catch a driver off-guard and end up in a major incident. The Singapore GP stewards will need to address this alarming issue before Sunday’s race.
