“Somebody told me that and I didn’t believe them,” George Russell expresses his disbelief at absurd Championship standings
George Russell
In his first three races with Mercedes, George Russell has met the expectations of the fans and his team, as he performed brilliantly. Although Mercedes as a team would not be satisfied with where they currently are in terms of pace, results, porpoising issues, and a lot more. Their car is the third fastest car on the grid after Red Bull and Ferrari. Only three races into the season and Mercedes have already given a lead to Ferrari and are only just ahead of Red Bull.
The Australian Grand Prix was the best example of what this season has been. Ferrari have made a wonderful car and keep extending their lead on other cars on track as well as in the championship standings. On the other hand, Red Bull are favourites for winning a lot of races and the championship but their car is not reliable. Max Verstappen had to suffer two DNFs in three races, exposing the reliability issues with his car, which is helping others take a lead over him and Red Bull. Lastly, the Silver Arrows have managed to put up a decent performance week in and week out but at the end of the day, it’s the mistakes by Red Bull which have led them into such a good position.
After a great weekend in Australia, where George Russell saw himself climbing up into the second position in the drivers championship, Mercedes would be looking forward to making the required changes to get their lost pace back.

George Russell in the Drivers Championship
George Russell is currently in the second position in the drivers championship with a nine point lead over his teammate, Lewis Hamilton who is in the 5th position. George Russell has adapted to the new car well and has put in some great performances. When he came to know about his position in the championship, he was shocked. He felt it was too ‘crazy’ to even believe it.
In an interview, George Russell said, “We know if we want to keep that position we need to find more performance in the car and I believe in my team back at base to be able to bring more performance but it’s going to take a lot of team. For the time being, let’s just keep capitalising,” as per gpfans.
There’s an ample amount of time left in this season and anything can happen. Maybe, the Silver Arrows only go on to improve from now on or maybe Red Bull might make a comeback. There are a lot of if’s and but’s and maybe’s and all these questions will be answered very soon, as we enter the Imola race week.
