In the illustrious 74-year history of Formula 1, only a handful of teams have earned their place among the sport’s legends. Ferrari, McLaren, and Lotus have left an indelible mark, boasting rich histories, records, and titles. Surprisingly, according to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, a relatively young contender, Red Bull, has proven worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as these iconic teams.

Red Bull made their F1 debut in 2005, and they initially dominated from 2010 through 2013 before the V6 Hybrid era began in 2014. After a brief hiatus, Red Bull made an impressive return during the Downforce era in 2022, reasserting their supremacy. In the last two years, the team has demonstrated ruthless dominance and is on the cusp of winning their sixth constructors’ title. So far, in 2023, Red Bull remains unbeaten, an unparalleled accomplishment in F1 history.

Asked about the potential negative impact of Red Bull’s supremacy, Domenicali dismissed any concerns, citing that such domination is woven into the fabric of F1’s past. The sport has witnessed earlier eras where particular teams capitalized on rule changes to outshine their rivals, be it Lotus with ground-effect cars or the glorious Ferrari-Michael Schumacher and McLaren-Senna-Prost eras, and now it’s Red Bull’s and Max Verstappen‘s time to shine.

He firmly believes that consistently winning races is a hallmark of great leadership, praising Red Bull’s prowess by stating, “If you’re able to win that many races, you’re a really great leader.” And according to the Italian, he doesn’t see “anything negative from that point of view.” He added, “Looking back, I’d say it’s always been part of F1.”

Domenicali also recognizes and commends Red Bull’s incredible achievements in designing and building their car. He acknowledges the team’s exceptional efforts, expressing, “I would say, first of all, it’s a good time to celebrate the incredible job that Red Bull has done with this car.”

Furthermore, Domenicali remains optimistic that the doubts surrounding technical choices will diminish in the next two years, leading to greater team convergence. However, he also believes that competition and innovation are intrinsic to Formula 1, emphasizing that whenever someone comes up with a groundbreaking idea, it’s crucial to observe and learn from it.
