Sergio Perez contends he is very much in the Formula One title race of the season with teammate Max Verstappen. The Mexican is making headlines after winning the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend, his third race victory in F1 and his second since entering his current team. It was a consequence that brought him within 15 points of championship leader Verstappen, who finished at P3.
His solid form this season, combined with Red Bull’s belief in him, have led to speculation that the 32-year-old could be a championship contender. Verstappen’s chief competitor, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, is only nine points behind him, but an optimistic Perez could be in the concoction as well if his luck holds.
Perez was questioned ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix if he believes he has an opportunity to challenge for the championship after signing an extension. “It was signed on Friday before Monaco and we didn’t discuss [receiving equal treatment to Verstappen]. There is nothing in my contract that says I need to finish second, or something like that, it was not a topic in the contract at all,” replied the Mexican.
Fans left divided over Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen
Perez’s first Red Bull win came at the facility of this weekend’s race. At one moment, the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix was Verstappen’s to forfeit, but a left-rear tyre malfunction caused him to collapse out of the race, luckily, his teammate was there to clean up the mess.
“I think Baku is all about confidence. It’s all about not making mistakes because here what really can catch you out is making those mistakes, losing track time, starting on the back foot, and you can compromise your weekend fairly easily here, so it’s very important to stay out of trouble,” added Perez on being asked about his plan to take on one of the most challenging circuits on the F1 calendar this weekend.
Stop this gloryfying of Perez! Guy was literally one time quicker then Verstappen, thats it, stop making more of this then it actually is. Three or four races from now he will be 45-50 points behind Verstappen. So No, for sure he is not competing for the championship.

However, this title fight which was initially a two-way fight between reigning F1 World Champion Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Monacan driver Charles Leclerc has now become a three-way fight with the emergence of Red Bull’s Mexican driver Sergio Perez in this serious title championship.

No championship contender is given race orders after 5 races. He's the bridesmaid and he knows it
