“Strategy’s not been kind to me man,” Lewis Hamilton unhappy with Mercedes strategy after being outpaced by George Russell

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell
Lewis Hamilton’s race finished in the place where he started it off, P6. But for his teammate, George Russell, it was another top 5 finish despite starting 12th. Russell managed to pull off another spectacular P5 finish, which only came after a close battle with Lewis.
Russell was in the back pack and already had pitted once, but Lando Norris’ crash opened up a window for the Briton to pit and get fresher tires. Lewis too enquired about the possibility of a pit for himself but was suggested to stay out, after the driver asked for a suggestion and let them take the call.
And as Lewis stayed out and the race continued, a battle between him and George sprouted, which the latter eventually won. Over the radio, the former was heard saying, “Strategy’s not been kind to me man,” suggesting his disappointment with the choice made by his team for him.

How did Mercedes manage this turnaround?

Going into Miami after the Imola, things looked bleak for the Silver Arrows as Lewis Hamilton’s struggles with the W13 seemed to be never-ending. But as Toto Wolff said, they seemed to have found a few directions to proceed in heading into the fifth round, and it seems that it did work. They introduced a new rear wing and a beam wing and made changes to the front wing endplate.
Mercedes appeared to be bouncing less and what’s interesting is that the magnitude of it seemed different in both Russell’s and Hamilton’s cars, suggesting different approaches to development taken for both the cars. Hamilton appeared to be comfortable and confident with the new configuration and did pull off a good driver after the two poor performances.
