“Take it with a pinch of salt” : Anthony Davidson cautions Mercedes against being complacent

George Russell

Anthony Davidson gets a behind-the-scenes focus at the world champions as the simulator pilot for Mercedes. Following the successful performance at the Spanish Grand Prix, the Briton is hesitant to get too excited about the progression of the team.

George Russell finishedP3 in Barcelona after keeping Max Verstappen behind him for extended periods of time. Lewis Hamilton also had a spectacular comeback despite being struck by Kevin Magnussen on the first lap and having to pit early on in the race.

Russell was the fastest driver on the track at the time, and he managed to make up a lot of ground. Mercedes has certainly taken a gradual approach, but it is now up to the team to maintain that momentum.

“There is still a gap” : Anthony Davidson

“It is encouraging. I’d take it with a pinch of salt because it’s small stepping stone. Mercedes, traditionally, has always been brilliant around Barcelona. I’m holding back just until they go to Monaco, which has always been ironically quite a tough race weekend for them”, said the analyst in a recent interview.

Despite his desire to be wary, the Briton sees headway at Mercedes. The W13 had a lot of porpoising issues in previous races, but that was not the case in Barcelona. Mercedes seems to finally get rid of their intense porpoising issues.

“I think the signs are pointing in the right direction, that it’s going their way, they are making improvements, the car doesn’t suffer this porpoising, bouncing issue that they have had. That was a big hurdle to get over, and I think if they can stay on top of that problem, then we should expect them to hopefully continue to close in on the gap in front, but there is still a gap,” concluded Davidson.
