“Teammate is a fallacy,” Christian Horner terms the relationship between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez as ‘fake’
Christian Horner and Sergio Perez
Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, called out the teammates as ‘fake friends’ after the 2022 season is one-third over, this is because both the drivers fighting for the title. With both drivers putting everything on the line for the win, things could get really bad for the teammate as a whole. No team receives the extra cash of winning the Constructor Championship for the Driver that managed to get the title.
Sergio Perez joined the Red Bull team at the start of the 2021 season, with hopes to just become a part of the title contention, the is not becoming the one to fight for his world championship. Which just adds extra pressure on the shoulders of the team that now has to manage the fight between the teammates. Christian Horner agrees to the same and ultimately breaks down the details of intra-teammate battles.
“The drivers are contractors to the team, they’re there to perform for the team. Teammate is a fallacy, the worst thing that they are. They are definitely not mates, because the guy in the other car is the only person that you’re judged against. He’s the only person with the same equipment, so he will either make or break your career,” said Horner.
Christian Horner compared the Intra and Inter Title battles
Christian understands the skillset Sergio has brought to the team by seeing his performance in 2021, this was also reflected after the Mexican signed a 2-year contract with the team. But that just brought more troubles for the team explained Horner.
“This year is a complete reset. Sergio feels much more at home in the car, so he now believes in himself that he can be a world champion, and that adds another dynamic,” the team boss continues.
On the other hand, Ferrari still holds Red Bull back for the title they want to back to Maranello, this just forces the teams to give out strict decisions for the team, “Our main competitor is Ferrari, but obviously the drivers want to race each other, but it’s like guys, be careful, this isn’t your car, this is the 800 people that design and build it for you. You’re just lucky enough to drive it, so please respect that and look after it,” said Horner.
Red Bull is 76 points clear of Ferrari, with both the drivers leading the pack in the driver’s title, Sergio is still under the condition to get his first win.
