The Drive to Survive season 5 has dropped on Netflix. This show details what goes on behind the scenes, exclusive footage that the fans have not seen before. Ferrari was in a tight spot last season with their driver drama and strategy. The third episode of the show “Matter of Principal” focuses on the team.

Most of the teams get an episode dedicated to them, especially the top teams, namely, Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes. The last 10 minutes of the third episode was a flashback of what happened in Silverstone, one of the best races of the season. Carlos Sainz won his first race in Formula One with Ferrari. However, Ted Kravitz, a pit lane reporter for Sky Sports F1, made a statement right after the race “What a day for Ferrari, but they won with the wrong car”.

Kravitz is well-known in the grid and calls things as it is. Though it was a moment to celebrate, the team did not think so. Ferrari wanted Sainz to help Leclerc, who was fighting for the championship. But due to poor strategy decisions, they failed to pit him. Sainz, however, pitted and was on fresh soft tires, and his teammate was on old hard tires. As Hamilton was catching up with the Ferraris, Sainz could not stand back and just defended.

The Spaniard went for the win and passed his teammate, leaving him vulnerable. This was a win for Ferrari at the Silverstone circuit, but the team was not happy with their strategy for Leclerc. The team wanted to keep him out to maintain his position, but this decision backfired. Ted Kravitz, along with everyone on the grid, blamed Mattia Binotto for his poor strategy.

There is footage of Christian Horner mentioning Ferrari should have pitted both Sainz and Leclerc. The episode ends with Binotto stating the team does not differentiate between their drivers. This is the main reason Fred Vasseur is for the 2023 season replaced him. Formula One is also about decision-making. To stay at the top, the teams must do what is required.

The 2023 season will be a different one for Ferrari, they cling to Frederic Vasseur, their new team principal, for hope. The French man had already started making changes in the team, he sent Inaki Rueda back to Maranello and appointed a new strategist, Ravin Jain. The team is focused on ending their 16-year drought and bringing the championship home.
