“That’s Helmut, he always teases,” Toto Wolff responds to Helmut Marko’s critical comments about missing a level-headed figure at Mercedes
Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff the Mercedes team Principal has recently shed light on what he thinks of the recent comments that Red Bull team adviser Helmut Marko made about the Brackley-based Mercedes Formula One team.
Helmut Marko while talking to the press last week said that Mercedes is lacking a solid personality in the team this season and has indicated that to guide their ship this season they could have used someone like Niki Lauda.
Marko feels Mercedes is in a mess right now and needs someone with a balanced mentality to bring some sanity to the team.
Since hearing about Marko’s comments Toto Wolff has also had a few words to say and has said, “That’s Helmut. He always teases, that’s okay. But what is true: Niki is always missing. I miss him as a friend and as a sparring partner and also as a chairman. Believe me, I would rather fight with Niki now than alone.” Niki Lauda died in 2019 at the age of 70.
This year to the surprise of many, Mercedes has struggled immensely and after 9 rounds are currently in third place in the Constructors Championship with only 188 points to its name, whereas Red Bull which is leading the chasing pack is way ahead of the rest with a massive points haul of 304.
However, Wolff is not ready to throw in the towel yet and is willing to fight till the end and has stressed how important it is to keep coming up with upgrades during the current season of F1.
Toto Wolff has already started looking at the 2023 F1 season
Given the gap that Mercedes has to Red Bull after 9 races, Toto knows that it is an extremely difficult task to overturn and especially when they have got a car that is nowhere near the liveries of the top two teams this season.
While talking about Mercedes and the 2023 season Wolff said, “The fact is that we are too far behind and we have to get that under control.”
“Every development we bring today is also important for next year. We definitely need to get off to a better start [next season].”
Toto has realized the fact that the 2022 Championship is now almost out of their reach but has stressed that they are going to do everything in their power to bring the gap down as much as possible to front runners Red Bull.
