“The euphoria is completely gone,” Italian media bashes Ferrari after a miserable weekend in Baku
Ferrari's woes continue in Baku
Ferrari, yet again, found a way to bottle it on race day after Charles Leclerc starred the show during qualifying. We all were aware that despite Ferrari’s brilliant showing in qualifying, Red Bull will come back hard because of their superior top speed on the long straights of Baku. But, nobody could have scripted the result of the race as both the Ferraris suffered DNFs putting a huge dent in their bid to win the constructor’s.
It all started with Carlos Sainz unable to steer the car going into Turn 4 due to a hydraulic issue, which meant that it was the end of the race for the Spaniard who couldn’t build on the strong result in Monaco. Now, the hopes of Tifosi were pinned on Ferrari’s star man of the season, Charles Leclerc. Red Bull definitely had more pace than Ferrari but that early pit stop for Charles under the VSC made things interesting.
After the pit stop, Charles Leclerc was P3 behind Max Verstappen. The reigning world champion quickly got past his team mate, Sergio Perez, who was clearly struggling. The Monegasque driver was gaining on Perez on his fresh set of hard tyres but unfortunately, just like Spain, had to retire out of the race due to an engine issue which saw smoke coming out of the car.
Ferrari slammed by Italian media as both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz retire out of the Azerbaijan GP
Another reliability related DNF has not gone down well with the Italian Media who have teared apart Ferrari.
La Gazzetta dello Sport: ”The Azerbaijan GP shows that something is going wrong and solutions have to be found very quickly. That won’t be easy, because you can’t let engines be tested endlessly anymore.
Corriere della Sera: “The euphoria of the start of the season is completely gone. After a fun childhood, Ferrari is now failing the exam of maturity.”
La Stampa: The reliability problems persist for Ferrari, which after a super start to the season is now experiencing a lot of bad luck. It is the fourth pole position in a row that is not converted into a victory and the second time in three races that Leclerc has dropped out,” as reported by gpblog.
Ferrari is now 81 points behind Red Bull and will need a miracle to get back in the championship. But they also have to wary of the threat Mercedes carries if they continue to have such weekends on a regular basis.
