Max Verstappen
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff contends that Max Verstappen will have a better chance in the 2022 F1 title race than he did while competing against mainly Mercedes in the 2021 F1 season. Whilst he had to contend with a far inferior car in the last season, the Mercedes team boss believes the Dutchman now has impetus on his side.
Max Verstappen has won all the races that he has finished this season. He claimed victory in the Saudi Arabian GP, Italian GP and the Miami GP. The only thing keeping him bay from the top of the drivers’ championship leaderboard is Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc who has accumulated a total of 104 points compared to Verstappen’s 85 points.
The Dutchman signed a new contract with Red Bull Racing after his victory at the Yas Marina Circuit in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season finisher last season. According to this contract. Verstappen is bound to Red Bull till the end of the 2028 season.
“He has the fastest car and everything is easier for him” : Toto Wolff on Max Verstappen

This is also abundantly obvious to Toto Wolff, who was still Verstappen’s chief competition as Mercedes team boss in 2021. Wolff and Mercedes, on the other hand, will be at a disadvantageous position in 2022.
”Last year Max drove a worse car with the knife between his teeth and won the world title. Now he has the fastest car and everything is easier for him. The momentum is in his favor now,” said Wolff in an interview ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend.

The Austrian team boss is primarily concerned with Mercedes’ abysmal run in the season yet. The silver W13 is significantly slower than the cars of Scuderia Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, that has already elevated the championship gap significantly. It persists to be seen how much of that loss can still be restored. The only silver lining for Mercedes at the moment is the fact that there are still eighteen races left on the calendar for this season.
