“The older I get, the more I realise it’s about the people,” Lewis Hamilton suggests races in the city rather than in the middle of nowhere

Formula 1 had its first ever Miami Grand Prix last week, being one of the two races that would take place in the United States of America this year. The GP saw many new fans and celebrities on the track, which made up a completely different vibe for the race. Although the track is permanent, drivers still seemed to be enjoying driving, and the specialities of Miami itself.
Formula 1 is set to have another race in USA from next year, in the “Sin City” itself; Las Vegas. This would mean that there would be 3 US GPs; Circuit of The Americas in Texas, Miami, and Las Vegas.

Having races in major cities means that the races are easier for fans to attend, and new fans are also born this way. With Saudi Arabia and the US GPs attendance, it is obvious that fans love to attend these races.
Following up on this trend, Lewis Hamilton has suggested that it is better for the races to be held in major cities like this, rather than outside the city.
“I’m a bit old school,” Hamilton contrasts between historical circuits and new circuits.
Although Lewis Hamilton said that it is better for the sport to have races in cities, he also quoted that he is a bit old school, understands why historical circuits are important, but at the end, the sport is for the fans, and if they themselves cannot attend the races properly, it is of no use.
“We could go to the middle of nowhere that has very few people, not great accommodation, not great community and for us, as individuals, driving on a track that’s historic is cool – but it’s about the people.
“And the people really do make it. We’ve experienced with pandemic, no one being in there and that’s just no atmosphere. It was like a test day. It was not enjoyable. And now we’re seeing hundreds of thousands of people turn up to the race, energized, excited, keen to learn more,” said Hamilton, quoted by Motorsport.
He said that the way Netflix’s Drive to Survive has given birth to a new fanbase, having the races in the cities where they are more accessible to fans might do the same thing, but on a larger scale.
Formula 1 has added 3 new circuits within three seasons, which include Saudi Arabia, Miami, and Las Vegas, which we would see next year.
