The FIA

Some big changes are underway in the entire structure of Formula 1‘s authoritative body–the FIA. Only recently, it was announced that F1 Sporting Director Steve Nielsen will be leaving the organisation to join the FIA with the same designation as Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the President of the FIA, talked about some of his plans to give a new shape to the sport’s governing body. The official news regarding Nielsen’s move to the FIA came out on Wednesday, and he has also given his own statement on it.

About five years ago, in 2017, Nielsen had arrived in Formula 1 with vast experience to amp up his resume, including several sporting roles at teams like Lotus, Tyrrell, Honda, Benetton, Arrows, Renault and Williams. Since then, he has held the post of the F1 Sporting Director until now. Ben Sulayem has confirmed that these changes are being initiated in order to reshuffle the structure of Formula 1’s rule-making body. Currently, a transitional period will be seen where Nikolas Tombazis will act as the FIA Single-Seater Director, and as the new Sporting Director, Nielsen will be reporting to him.

Nikolas Tombazis had previously occupied the position of the FIA Technical Director. But now, that role will be taken up by McLaren alumnus Tim Goss. On the other hand, François Sicard, who was previously the Sporting Director at the FIA, will become the Strategy & Operations Director with Federico Lodi joining as the Financial Director. F1 is a fast-paced sport where rules are changed quite often, and thus Stefano Domenicali and Ben Sulayem have clarified these alterations in the FIA are required to maintain complete transparency.

As a part of the FIA President’s plan to bring in some changes in the rule-making body ahead of the start of the 2023 F1 season, Steve Nielsen is all set to start his role as the FIA Sporting Director. While releasing his statement on his new job, he said, “I have spent my professional life working for many teams and organisations in Formula 1, and cannot wait to engage with another new chapter with the FIA. I’d like to thank both the President and Stefano Domenicali for their trust in me. Having worked closely with a number of people in the Federation over the years, I’m looking forward to tackling those challenges that lie ahead with them.”

In the upcoming season, many new rule changes are expected to be declared as the Formula 1 committee, along with the FIA, are hard at work to make sure the sport remains fair to all and exciting for the fans. Now, it only remains to be seen how many of these rules are appreciated by the participating teams, and if any of these spark up some controversies like the porpoising problems did in 2022.
