‘The W-13 will go in the caves’: Toto Wolff reckons the 2023 challenger will not have a special place in Mercedes’ museum
Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff, CEO and Team Principal of Mercedes Amg F1 team accept the disappointment W13 has been this season. Toto agrees with a bad season Mercedes has had to face after the domination of the last eight years in Formula 1 racing. Though 2022 hasn’t been as bad as everyone expected the regaining world champion to have it wasn’t on the level of a winning mindset they have had always.
Mercedes has a total of 11 podiums this season but most of them were because of bad luck at the top. Though Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have been the best pairing on the grid with an expectation of getting their first win this season after scoring multiple podiums in the last races. Though there is still a huge gap between Mercedes and the top two teams, the chances for this season seem to have faded down as the team will shortly start its work with the 2023 car.
Toto being critical about the W13 accepts the fate with W13 being the worst car in the history of the team and will eventually have no place in the Mercedes museum. “I don’t think it’s gonna have the highest place in the Mercedes Benz Musem in Stuttgart. Maybe gonna go a little bit in the caves,” said Toto Wolff.

Belgian GP ultimately broke the hopes for Toto Wolff and Mercedes
Belgian GP was a race Toto agreed to be one of his worse experiences being the team principal after a disappointing result in Qualifying. Lewis and George were not even in the top 5 as the Saturday ended. On Sunday Lewis retired on the very first lap after a collision with Fernando Alonso. Though George managed to beat a Ferrari and secured the fourth position, outpacing the car, Lewis seemed dissatisfied with his car.
Mercedes were 1.8 seconds off to Max Verstappen’s lap time on Saturday. And with the pace Max showed in the main race, it won’t be wrong to mention it is out of the world. Mercedes find itself nowhere near the top team in terms of pace. The only positive for the team is the consistency the drivers are maintaining every race finishing the race in the top 5.
Mercedes are currently 41 points off Ferrari in the championship table with more than 7 races to go. Mercedes seems to have a really strong race pace, with a hope to catch the top two teams by the end of the season.
