Ferrari and Charles Leclerc have always been a contender for pole in almost every race this season where the Monegasque driver has been displaying an impressive performance over one lap. There’s no doubt over Leclerc’s ability in qualifying but a bad Saturday has now left him a bit concerned. However there have been some car issues that the team is tackling which might have been the reason behind his poor performance during qualifying.
With Max Verstappen putting his Red Bull on pole, the Mercedes duo completed the top 3 with Perez in P4. Charles Leclerc’s teammate put his Ferrari in P5 with the Monegasque driver slotting into P7 with Valtteri Bottas being sandwiched between the two drivers in P6. Leclerc explained that power unit issues because a nuisance for him all throughout the session which in turn caused him to have less power on the straights than usual.
The Ferrari driver hopes that his team can rectify the situation before the race starts as it could be a massive reliability threat otherwise. Racing at high altitudes comes with its own set of problems so it will be crucial for the Scuderia to find a solution for both its drivers. We could possibly see a lot of engine failures at the Mexican GP. Here is what Leclerc had to say about this deeply concerning situation.
Charles Leclerc is concerned about the reliability of his Ferrari ahead of the Mexican GP
The Monegasque driver expressed his concerns over the reliability of the car in the post session media interviews. “We need to look into it. It was mostly engine-wise; we were losing a lot of time down the straight, and there were loads of problems with drivability. The engine was not responding to the throttle input I was giving. Especially in the high speed, it was extremely difficult,” he said.
“I really hope we can fix that for tomorrow. If yes, I feel confident we can have a good result. If not, I’m not sure how it will go. I think this is really a one-off. For me, it was really strange. We need to look into it, and I hope we can find something for tomorrow,” he continued.
Even Carlos Sainz seemed to struggle massively along with Charles Leclerc over the course of the weekend. It seems like only a miracle will be able to give the Scuderia a chance at victory in Mexico City. With both the championship already settled, there will be less pressure to perform but it will he crucial that both the cars finish the race to get valuable data for the team.
