“There is some work to do,” Kevin Magnussen rates Ferrari inspired Haas’ upgrade package

The comeback of Kevin Magnussen to F1 has been impressive, filled with impressive results and gutsy performances. The Dane started the season in Bahrain with a blistering P5 finish and followed it up with 2 points at the Saudi Arabian GP. But, it all came to a standstill after those two performances as he could only muster mere 4 points in the next 8 races.

This meant that upgrades were needed for the American team if they wanted to cling on to that 7th place in the constructor’s championship, with AlphaTauri right on its tail. But, the fact that Haas has had to spend so much on crashes and reliability concerns and when you mix it up with the budget cap, it was almost next to impossible for them to spend on upgrading the VF-22.

The area of respite for Haas has been that the car looked without the upgrades but Guenther Steiner decided to upgrade Kevin Magnussen’s car, with Mick Schumacher scheduled to receive his set of upgrades by the Belgian GP. Hungarian GP is the first race that Kevin Magnussen has had the chance to try out his upgrades and to find out what’s the right set up for these changes.

Kevin Magnussen, after the two practice sessions in Hungary, talked about the upgrades fared out. He explained, “We got some testing done on the upgrades and the new parts and all the numbers that we got were fine as expected, so that’s a very good thing. Of course, there’s some work to do to really get it dialled in and get more of the potential out of the package in terms of lap time and balance.”

“We’ve got some good data and it looks like we have got what we tried to get and that is a good first step, then we try to find more in the balance and the set-up.”

“There are some positive new characteristics that are going to be interesting to explore but there is some work to do to really get the maximum out of it, that is for sure.”

This could be a big weekend for the tail end as both Haas and AlphaTauri have brought in their upgrades. But, as we have seen in the past, bringing in the upgrades but finding the set up is equally important and both teams would want to it.
