‘There was a bit more in there,’ Nyck De Vries dishes out harsh assessment of his F1 debut

Nyck De Vries
Formula E world champion and Mercedes reserve driver Nyck De Vries was in Monza for the weekend where he was going to take part in an FP1 session with Aston Martin replacing Sebastian Vettel. Soon after the session was done, it looked like the Dutch driver won’t be going anywhere near a formula one car for the rest of the weekend but that did not seem to be the case. A few hours later it was made known to the public that Williams driver Alex Albon was admitted to the hospital and that is where it all turned around for De Vries.
Following Alex Albon’s treatment for Appendicitis which needed surgery, it meant that the Williams driver wouldn’t be able to take part in the Italian GP. This made the team take a tough decision and choose who would replace the Thai driver before FP3 takes place. The squad decided to go with Mercedes reserve Nyck De Vries where it was revealed that he was having coffee in the Mercedes hospitality when he was informed about the news shortly before the public announcement was made.
The Dutch driver immediately got started with his job and took on qualifying. Everyone was interested in seeing who would come out on top among the Williams teammates and it was a little surprising to see Nyck De vries come out on top. With a p9 finish for the Dutch driver in the race, the team and fans were overjoyed . Although Nyck was a bit critical of his performances during the weekend and shared a few of his thoughts on it.

“I’m always a bit critical of myself,” Nyck De Vries reflecting on the Italian GP weekend.

The Dutch driver further went on to talk about Alex and his own performance. “I didn’t expect to do qualifying this weekend. I feel very sorry for Alex that he is so unlucky that he is now in hospital. Fortunately, he is doing well. For me, it’s a great opportunity and a chance to race this weekend. We had very little time to be fully prepared, but I think we put in a decent performance. I’m always a bit critical of myself anyway and I think there could have been a bit more in there,” he said.
Last weekend proved that Nyck De Vries is Formula 1 material and that it is necessary to somehow bring him into the sport. He will be testing with Alpine at Hungaroring along with a few other drivers before the Singapore GP which could possibly mean a shot at a full season f1 seat for the Dutch driver. He could possibly move to Alpine or to Williams to replace Latifi who is performing very poorly as seen last werkend. Only time will tell.
