Ferrari’s gaffes in Monaco do not shock F1 journalist Norbert Haug. The former head of Mercedes’ motorsport department claims that such scenes benefit the Italian team and thus destroy productive outcomes.

In Monaco, if you can begin from P1 and P2, almost nothing could go wrong. Nonetheless, during the 2022 edition, Ferrari tended to have Charles Leclerc finish third. When Red Bull Racing put the team under brief duress, many poor choices were taken.

”From the outside, it always seems like there’s a lot of pressure internally on Ferrari to make decisions right, where a ‘normal decision’ is a much better choice. Ferrari made things unnecessarily difficult for themselves in Monaco, turning a simple win into a fourth place finish for title contender Leclerc,” said Haug.

”They gave Verstappen an unnecessary and potentially world championship-deciding gift here. Unfortunately, this kind of blunder belongs in the history of Ferrari, who from time to time kill brilliant results themselves. During the next race, the pressure will not be less because of this,” added Haug.

Ferrari’s sizable lead over Red Bull Racing has vanished in the last two races. The most excruciating retirement was Charles Leclerc’s at the front of the race in Barcelona, but the frustration in Monaco has contributed to Ferrari falling 36 points behind its Austrian competitor.

Ferrari will get a chance to recoup this weekend in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will try to outperform Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to keep the hopes alive of winning the title race.
