Ferrari has been a bit hot and cold in the first half of the 2022 F1 season and former team engineer, Enrique Scalabroni wants his former employers to choose the number 1 driver between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

Scalabroni believes that if they are to challenge the mighty Red Bull for the Drivers Championship this season, then they have to make tough decisions.

Carlos Sainz was allowed to come away with maximum points from Silverstone and that sparked a huge debate in Italy as Charles Leclerc has been the more consistent performer this season.

The decision to let Sainz win in Silverstone did not sit well with many Formula One analysts and Scalabroni while talking about the decision-making at the Maranello-based team said, “At this level, where they have to make up a lot of points per force on Verstappen and Red Bull, they have to find a system where there is a first driver and a supporting driver, who has to work for the team’s profit.”

Ferrari is currently in second place in the Drivers Championship with Charles Leclerc who has got 170 points to his name. Moreover, Scalabroni has indicated that it does not matter to him who the number 1 driver is, he just wants the team to make a decision so that they can look at the race scenarios from a unified perspective.

He has compared the current situation at the team with the Williams pairing of 1986. “If the team wants to win, it should not go the way it did with Mansell and Piquet.

The engineer is desperate for Ferrari to make a final decision and has indicated that from the French Grand Prix onward, the team should back the driver who has got more points and has had fewer problems so far in the season.

If Ferrari decides to go by points, then it is a no-brainer as Charles Leclerc is ahead of Carlos Sainz, however, if they are to take into account the DNFs, then the picture is quite different.

Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have had their fair share of DNFs this season and it has been down to the reliability issues that are coming to the center stage every now and then.

Ferrari has got a decision to make and given the delicate position of the team in the Championship, it is going to be quite interesting to see what the team is going to decide and how they will handle its two drivers during the upcoming French Grand Prix.
