“They’ll come back,” Emerson Fittipaldi still hopeful of a Mercedes comeback

Mercedes‘ start to the season has been filled with troubles. Most of them can be eliminated if the team fixes the porpoising, as it appears to be the root of all the evil. The 8-time constructors’ championship winners, all coming in the past consecutive season, currently stand third in the title race, against everybody’s expectations.

Despite the troubles, they have managed to points in every race, thanks to the spectacular performances of George Russell. They also have a podium from the season opener as Lewis Hamilton finished P3. All of this also helps Emerson Fittipaldi to believe that the team can make a strong comeback this season.

While speaking with VegasInsider, the former champion said, “Like they said in conversation on the radio after the race both Toto Wolf and Lewis were saying ‘well now have to work hard’. They work hard and they’ll come back.”

Mercedes drivers- George Russell and Lewis Hamilton

George Russell came to the team from Williams this season and has bagged top 5 finishes in all 4 races so far. His run has overshadowed Lewis Hamilton and brought him under scrutiny for not performing well despite running the car for the same team. Lewis has only managed to finish thrice in the points, which is far below the standards that he has set over his 15 years of F1 career.

Emerson Fittipaldi believes that the experienced driver will be back. He said, “It’s interesting to see George Russell running ahead of Lewis. You know, at the beginning of the year, Lewis came from the back and made very good results. Also better than George Russell. So he’s there, but I think it’s just the circumstances that were completely against him this weekend. He’ll be back strong.”

Complimenting Russell, Fittipaldi said, “And George Russel is good. I mean, we all know that he’s a young talent and very good. And he’s going to be running together with Lewis. The speed is there.”

Mercedes are expected to develop their car at a steady pace. Toto Wolff shared that if they can get on top of the porpoising, quite a lot of lap time is there for Mercedes.
