“They’re part of our history and DNA,” Christian Horner demands for the protection of the historic races in F1

The Formula 1 calendar is likely to grow next year with the addition of Las Vegas and Qatar on the grid. Redbull Team Principal Christian Horner is thus concerned with how F1 will manage the additions to the calendar. This is because F1 is in talks with South Africa for a race there and along with it, China is eyeing a place on the 2023 grid after failing to host a grand prix in recent years due to the pandemic.
With these events already lined up, it is certain that F1 will consider removing some of the European rounds of the championship according to Christian Horner. There are three races which will run out of their contract this year and are likely the ones from which a race will not be renewed. The three races are France, Monaco and Spa.
Red Bull’s Team Principal Christian Horner went on to say in an interview that the teams would fight hard to keep Spa on the calendar for the future. Tracks like Spa and Monaco have been on the F1 grid for decades and have become historic due to their significance and the amount of times that F1 has raced on their tarmac. It would be a shame to lose these tracks. Christian further elaborates on the whole situation.
“You’ve got to have that history,” Christian Horner says
“There should be a few races – Monaco, Silverstone, Spa, Monza – they’re the big ones, the historic ones, and I think we should ringfence and really protect those. It’s great that these new venues are coming in and that there is interest but you’ve got to have that history.
“It would be like having the ATP tour without Wimbledon. I think they’re part of our history, they’re part of our DNA,” he said.
“We’ll definitely make our opinion known, but you’ve got to trust the people that are running the business at the end of the day. They’re obviously driven by their bottom line and where the revenue is and where the interest is going to come from and an extra race in the US versus a race in Spa, that’s what they’re going to have to weigh up,” he continued.
Christian Horner is adamant that it is necessary that F1 keeps historic races on the calendar but trusts the decisions of the big wigs at F1 at the end of the day. Which historic circuit do you think will be removed for 2023?
