“Through goes Hamilton!” Mercedes post a hilarious version of Lewis Hamilton’s epic move in Silverstone 2022
Lewis Hamilton passing Sergio Perez, who was locked in battle with Charles Leclerc
This year’s British Grand Prix was certainly one for the ages. Terrifying crashes at the start, safety car drama, an epic three-way fight, and Carlos Sainz’s first victory of his career. It thrilled viewers, and it was one that we will be talking about for a long time to come. The highlight in fact was the three-way fight between Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez, and Charles Leclerc.
Mercedes had been rather up and down for the vast majority of the season before Silverstone and had never even been in contention for the win at any stage in any meaningful way. Spain had probably been their best weekend in terms of pace, and even that was only good enough for a P3 and a P5. But Silverstone was different.
While teammate George Russell was forced to retire, Lewis Hamilton, for the first time this season, genuinely looked competitive for the win at one stage. A lot of things came together for him – Sergio Perez got relegated to the back of the grid after he damaged his car in contact with Charles Leclerc, Leclerc’s right front wing endplate fell off and Max Verstappen ran over debris and damaged his floor. But it happened.

Mercedes’ creative interpretation of the three-way battle
In the race, Lewis Hamilton had been chasing down the Ferraris following his pitstop and was making good time. But then Esteban Ocon stopped on the straight, which meant one thing: a safety car. The safety car came out, and most of the frontrunners pitted, but Charles Leclerc, the race leader, did not.
As was to be expected, when the safety car came in, Leclerc, with his much slower, and older hard tyres was fighting with one hand tied behind his back with the others. He was quickly overtaken by teammate Carlos Sainz, who drove off into the distance, but he still had to fight Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton.
On lap 45, Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc were locked into battle with each other for P2, and Lewis Hamilton was just behind. Leclerc squeezed Perez going into Vale, and Perez went off the track, cut the chicane, and pushed Leclerc off the track. Lewis Hamilton took full advantage of that and overtook both. Eventually, however, Hamilton had to concede to both on the next lap, even though he was able to overtake Leclerc later to finish on the podium.
Recently, Mercedes posted a throwback of this, with their own creative interpretation and a currently trending meme attached with it:
It was certainly an epic moment, one that would have sent chills down the spine of every Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes fan. The battle itself was also something to behold, and it was a testament to the skill of the drivers involved in the battle. Since Silverstone, Mercedes’ results have also picked up, and Lewis Hamilton has stood on the podium every race since that. One could call it a turning point in their season.
