“Too late to redesign a car now” : Christian Horner unimpressed with the FIA pushing for changes in 2023

There is a lot of debate in Formula 1 about potential regulation changes for 2023. Mercedes is firmly in favour of any modifications that would lessen porpoising and enhance the safety. However, Red Bull Racing thinks that the regulations don’t need to be changed, and the persists even after the French Grand Prix.

To guarantee the safety of the drivers, Mercedes contends that new regulations are required. Red Bull, though, contends that the Formula 1 teams can reduce the vehicles’ porpoising by merely elevating the vehicle a little. Although there will be some efficiency loss, the issue of porpoising will cease.

Despite the fact that the FIA is about to step in, Horner emphasised in a recent interview that it is not the responsibility of the regulating body to make sure that a racing team regains its competitiveness. Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner revealed earlier this weekend that Mercedes is making strong efforts to have the alterations approved. Then, Toto Wolff spoke up cleverly for Mercedes.

Horner is hopeful the FIA would make a “sensible decision,” but he is adamant that it is already too late to change the rules for the upcoming season, particularly in light of the cost cap that all teams must follow. Red Bull believes that some of the smaller teams will have an even greater significant challenge because they do not have the capabilities to cope as swiftly.

“It’s too late to redesign a car now for next year,” said Horner. Red Bull claims that during the last three or four races, very few teams have experienced porpoising, thus he worries that the FIA may be exaggerating. According to Horner, the winter is also prolonged enough for the porpoising-affected teams to organise their issues for 2023.
