For the past few weeks, there have been multiple members of the paddock who have called out the integration of Red Bull and VCARB. McLaren’s CEO has been the most prominent figure demanding change in regulations to prohibit a manufacturer from owning two teams. Now, Toto Wolff has joined the American and called out for stricter regulations around such cases.
It was recently announced that VCARB would be shifting to Red Bull’s Milton Keynes base to conduct aerodynamic research. This sparked conspiracies against both teams, and several figures called for action against the two outfits. The Austrian also agreed with the discussions taking place in the paddock. Subsequently, Wolff took a dig at the current relationship between the two teams.
Like Zak [has] brought up, if one guy takes all the decisions, or a small group of people for two teams, what does it mean for our good governance in the sport? You have two votes in a 10-group F1 commission. You already have 20% of the votes. And none of us has that.Toto Wolff said as reported by motorsport.com
The 52-year-old stated that such close integration of the two teams could harm the balance between the customer and the constructor teams. Furthermore, the decision of both teams would be the same and could influence any decision to be passed during the board meetings. The Mercedes boss was adamant that stricter regulations should be brought into place. In turn, it will help in preserving a team’s identity.
What is the solution to this problem according to Toto Wolff?
Wolff has mentioned that such problems are omnipresent in the current state of the F1 grid. Previously, in the 2000s, customer cars were banned and the teams were forced to build challengers themselves. Subsequently, a situation of such kind has been boiling up in the paddock and has become a major concern among the teams.
I'm talking about our own business here because we are earning good money in supplying parts. We are selling suspensions to Aston Martin and to Williams, and gearboxes and aerodynamic services in terms of the wind tunnel to Aston Martin. And that is quite a profit contributor. But I'd rather not have any of that and have all of us being a constructor because then we can stop all of these discussions.Toto Wolff said as reported by motorsport.com
The Austrian shared a solution from the onset of 2026, according to which, the sharing of various elements of the cars should be stopped. Although the Silver Arrows themselves provide parts to other teams, the Mercedes boss is adamant that it would solve the issue once and for all.
However, it is not sure that such things will eventually take place. Various teams on the grid need technical assistance to sustain themselves. On the contrary, such regulations would widen the difference between the top teams and the smaller ones. This will create a hostile environment for the smaller teams and could lead them to get kicked out of the sport.
