Toto Wolff admits Mercedes “screwed up big time” this year and gives up hope of securing a win

Toto Wolff the Mercedes team Principal after the French Grand Prix has sounded like a dejected man and has accepted that it is going to be possible for them to win a race during the current season.

Mercedes was expected to challenge Red Bull and Ferrari in France but despite securing a 2nd and 3rd place finish, the Silver Arrows were not able to match the timings of the top two teams this season.

Wolff has admitted that the Brackley-based team has messed up in many areas and that the performance gap is not only because of messing up in one department.

Moreover, Wolff believes the team was not expecting to fall off the pedestal that they built during the turbo hybrid era, and while stressing about it the Austrian said, “And now we are in that situation.”

The former 8-time Constructors Champions have massively fallen short this season and Wolff has recently admitted that he can’t see a way in which Mercedes can possibly win a Grand Prix this season.

Before Paul Ricard, I would have said yes, now we wonder why we are a second behind Max Verstappen and six-tenths behind Ferrari. We have a long way to go to be able to dream of victories.”

Wolff is aware that the package that Mercedes has produced for 2022 is not good enough and after France, has given up hope and grudgingly accepted that the team screwed up this season.

“We screwed up mechanically, we screwed up aerodynamically, it’s never just one thing.”

While Mercedes is out of both the Championships this season, Wolff has turned his attention to the enticing battle that is taking place between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.

The 50-year-old while talking about the same, said, “Charles is an exceptional driver, a great personality, he deserves to win. I don’t know if it does him any good but if I could choose it would be him.”

Wolff has backed the Monegasque driver to get the better of Max Verstappen but the way the standings are at the moment, it is going to be an uphill task for Leclerc to win the 2022 Formula One Championship.
