Ferrari is on course to cement their lead on the championship as Leclerc claims their and his second win of the 2022 season. And the Scuderia, comfortably sit on top of the Constructor’s championship with a 49 point lead on Mercedes in second place. And Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff claims the team owes their spurt to success to their Power unit.
Mercedes have suffered a poor start and has been struggling to find the pace. The W13 has suffered from porpoising and this has made the car unstable in the straights finding itself behind mid-field cars and backmarkers. Mercedes-powered teams have also been struggling for straight-line speed at times compared to those running Ferrari and Red Bull-badged power units.
Toto Wolff has claimed the Silver Arrows did not unlock a major performance barrier in their car but clarified the teams’ outlook with respect to Upgrades. The Silver Arrows must understand their ideal setup to minimise bouncing and get the most downforce out of it.

Toto Wolff: “They were about 14bhp behind, but now they are another 14bhp ahead”
Ferrari Power unit has shown fantastic speed on all tracks so far. While ‘the prancing horse’ leads the Constructors championship, its customer teams Haas and Alfa Romeo have outperformed many of their counterparts ranking P7 and P6 respectively. It’s the most noticeable element and, at the same time, the only one that has not had reliability issues this year.
Toto Wolff was all praises for the Ferrari Power unit. The Austrian said, “I can only congratulate them. Previously they were about 14bhp behind, but now they are another 14bhp ahead. We have never seen such big progress in such a short time.”
Charles Leclerc leads the drivers’ championship by 34 points which is more than anyone did during any point in the 2021 season. And the Italian team will be looking to increase their advantage with another strong performance in Imola for the Emilia Romagna GP on April 22-24.
