Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, has led its charge for a long time. He has been pivotal in the success the team has amassed over the years and ahead of the upcoming 2024 F1 season, he has made it known that he wants to lead the Mercedes operation till he is 80 years old.
Toto Wolff has a well-known reputation in the F1 paddock for making bold remarks. Over the years, he has made several peculiar remarks but his most recent one is proving very difficult to wrap heads around.
While talking about his future with Mercedes, Wolff in a soon-to-be released book, F1 Racing Confidential, said, as reported by Autosport:
Life is full of surprises. I would never have imagined I would be here or the success of this team. I am 52 now. It sounds like an old age but hopefully, there are another 30 years of Mercedes F1 for me. It's important that when you hand over the baton at 80, you can say: That was pretty good. I am happy with myself - I met my own expectations of my life.
Looking at the reaction of Toto Wolff, it is quite evident that he really likes his current job. He wants to take Mercedes to the very top once again and is thus, willing to spend more years at the pinnacle of motor racing. He has so far managed to help his team amass a brillaint eight Constructors Championships and also a impressive seven drivers’ world title.
Toto Wolff recently signed a three-year contract extension at Mercedes
While Toto Wolff has revealed his desire to keep leading the charge of the Mercedes F1 team for several decades, he recently signed a three-year contract extension. His deal is going to keep him at Mercedes until the end of the 2026 F1 season.
Moreover, the way he has talked about his job, it will not come as a huge surprise if somewhere down the line he is once again seen singing a contract extension. His good friend, Lewis Hamilton will depart from Mercedes at the 2024 F1 season.
