The underwhelming run of Mercedes at the Australian GP continues as George Russell faces a disappointing end to the race. The Briton failed to finish the race as he suffered from an incident during the 57th Lap of the Australian GP. His teammate Lewis Hamilton also faced early retirement following an engine failure during the 17th Lap.
During the penultimate lap of the race, George Russell suffered a colossal high-speed crash. The Briton was in a battle with Fernando Alonso for the sixth spot at the Australian GP. Russell suffered a disastrous crash and the chassis was badly affected by the crash as the 26-year-old was airborne.

Mercedes had a weekend filled with disappointment in Australia as the team failed to score any points in the race. Even the Qualifying session was spotted with no significant results for Brackley. Lewis Hamilton had already been out of the race following an engine failure early on.
Following this, George Russell was expected to score some points and put a happy note to the disastrous weekend. Hence, the 2024 Australian GP is a race that the German manufacturer would like to put behind them and move their focus to the Japanese GP.
George Russell was unhurt from the disastrous crash
George Russell’s car was in the air for a few seconds before landing on two wheels on the turn. Hence, a Virtual safety car was immediately employed during the last lap of the race. Additionally, other drivers on the track still had to maneuver through the debris and the crashed challenger. However, regardless of the crash, Russell did not sustain any major injuries or issues following the crash.
Russell immediately informed his race engineer that he was okay despite the big crash. Fernando Alonso gained an easy overtake from the challenger in front and finished in P6. Additionally, the Briton’s crash disabled any chances of last-lap battle between the two Ferrari drivers in front. Hence, Carlos Sainz won the 2024 Australian GP.
Mercedes would surely trace back their footsteps at the Australian GP and figure out what went wrong. The team is heading out from Australia with zero points and damaged W15 challengers of both drivers. Hence, Brackley would have to first fix the chassis with a potential impending penalty to Hamilton due to issues with his power unit.
