Fred Vasseur termed Carlos Sainz’ penalty ‘unacceptable’
After the shocking drain cover incident that revealed a significant safety oversight by Formula 1 organizers, Carlos Sainz found himself with extensive damage to his car. The impact necessitated the replacement of several components, including the main engine. As per FIA regulations, exceeding the allocated number of engines results in a 10-place grid penalty for the driver. However, this engine change was prompted because of a shameful oversight by the organisers rather than a team intervention.
Despite the circumstances being beyond Sainz’s control, he received the penalty, sparking criticism from Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur. Vasseur expressed his discontent during the ‘Team Principal’s press conference,’ labeling the situation as “unacceptable.” He clarified that Sainz hit the loose drain cover without any caution, causing severe damage to the monocoque, engine, and battery.
Vasseur later engaged in a brief disagreement with Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ Team Principal, as Wolff downplayed the incident’s impact on the sport’s reputation. While Wolff defended the inaugural weekend at Las Vegas, Vasseur stood firm and continued highlighting the safety concern posed by loose drain covers and emphasizing the unfair ruling of Sainz’s subsequent penalty.
