“We are certainly not the favourites”: Helmut Marko wary of potential Ferrari domination in Hungary

Helmut Marko thinks that the postponement of the new technical directive is good, but that 'it's still too early'.

Although Red Bull have already come through as the leading team in this year’s Formula 1 2022 season, it is going to be difficult for the Milton-Keynnes-based team to fetch a race win in Hungary. Judging from the past records that Red Bull have got at Hungaroring, the last time they had a Grand Prix victory in Budapest was when Daniel Ricciardo earned the race title in 2018. Ever since then, Red Bull has been on the lookout for another Hungarian Grand Prix win.

Unfortunately for Red Bull, their team advisor Helmut Marko is afraid it might be difficult for them to finally get their long-awaited victory this year too, since the two Ferraris are have shown some pace last week in France. Although Red Bull’s Max Verstappen became the Champion at the French Grand Prix, Ferrari racer Charles Leclerc had been the pole-sitter and he had also led the maximum number of laps in that race but ultimately, had to retire due to some engine issues which caused his car to break down towards the end of his run.

Now that the F1 paddocks have shifted to Hungary for the Grand Prix at Hungaroring, Helmut Marko fears that Red Bull will not be able to win the race here as they have had a tough time in this Circuit. Last time a Red Bull racer won the Hungarian GP, it was back in 2018, and thus, the records are not in favor of the Championship-leading team in this case. The 79-year-old has also acknowledged that Ferrari is the Hungarian crowd’s absolute favorite for winning the race here.

Speaking of Ferrari’s suspected domination in Hungary, Helmut Marko said, “There are a lot of tight corners where they [Ferrari] can impress with their traction. We are certainly not the favourites, but we want to make the most of it.”
