Mercedes had a stupendous qualifying session in Hungary with George Russell who managed to secure the first pole position of his career and the team is in an upbeat mood heading into the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Mercedes crew is pleased with the qualifying performance and their trackside engineer, Andrew Shovlin has also indicated that Russell and Hamilton did a really good job for the team.

During the Q3 session, the Silver Arrows were nowhere near the top end of the timing sheets but they were somehow able to dial the car in ahead of qualifying and as a result, the W13 got better and better when it mattered.

Shovlin while talking about the team’s performance said, “It was a strong session for both drivers.”

“In the early stages it didn’t look like we quite had the pace to fight for the top spot but as the session went on it seemed to be coming towards us and the times were just getting better and better. George put together an awesome lap at the end for pole position.”

Mercedes is starting from pole position for the upcoming race and at the moment, the feeling within the team is that of optimism and Shovlin has himself admitted that the team is heading in the right direction.

The Mercedes engineer further said, “We’ve been getting closer but at recent races, we’ve not quite had the pace over the stint to match Red Bull or Ferrari.

We’re expecting it to be tough tomorrow but it’s another encouraging sign that we are slowly but surely moving in the right direction and further motivation to the team to keep up the hard work.”

Mercedes is improving but when it comes to race sim, the team is still behind Red Bull and Ferrari. Moreover, Shovlin believes that it is not going to be easy for George Russell to hold on to his Pole position, considering, he has got the Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc to give him company.
