“We are the ones who take all the risk”: Sergio Perez uses Zhou Guanyu’s example to oppose the idea of a salary cap for F1 racers

Yesterday at the historic Silverstone Circuit, F1 debutant Zhou Guanyu had a huge scare as his car overturned and went straight into the fence at the very start of the British Grand Prix. The FIA immediately called for a red flag after the massive accident, and all the racers were left apprehensive as they worried about young Zhou’s health as the Alfa Romeo racer has to be taken out on a stretcher to the nearest medical centre where he has to be properly examined.

While Zhou Guanyu did not suffer any major injuries and was conscious upon arrival at the medical centre, the accident was one of the worst that the F1 drivers had seen in recent years. Red Bull racer Sergio Perez has spoken to Sky Sports F1 in a post-race interview about what went on in his mind after witnessing Guanyu Zhou’s huge crash. The Spaniard explained that he was relieved to hear the Zhou is well now, but he went on to describe the immense risks that all F1 racers have to take every time they go out on the tracks during a Grand Prix weekend.

In the recent years, Formula 1 has undergone a paradigm shift when it comes to several pre-existing rules and regulations. This year, the FIA introduced a budget cap for all the teams to ensure that they spend a nearly equal amount and the teams with more sponsors do not get to exercise an unfair advantage on the teams with smaller capital. But due to the budget cap, many people have put foward the concern that teams will now have to cut on the costs that go into paying the drivers’ salaries to ensure they spend within the specified limits.

Following Zhou Guanyu’s horrific crash yesterday at the 2022 British GP, Sergio Perez vehemently opposed the proposition of a drivers’ salary cap as he believes all the F1 drivers should be paid for the immense risks they take on the tracks and the hard work they put in while driving in an F1 Grand Prix.

Then, Checo talked about Zhou Guanyu’s accident, saying, “It’s been a while since we’ve seen an accident like that. It’s hard to see that, try to erase it from your mind and concentrate on what you need to do.”

He continued, “We are the ones who take all the risk and give a show. So I don’t think it’s good to talk about that (salary cap) now. The most important thing today is that nobody got hurt.”
