George Russell marks a return to the podium after a gap of three races. It was a podium for which he had to battle with Sergio Perez till the very last corner of the race. It was expected that Mercedes would enjoy its time on a smooth Paul Ricard circuit but a 2-3 was something which nobody could have predicted, especially when you factor in the pace of the Red Bulls and Ferraris.

With Carlos Sainz starting from the back of the grid, a podium must have been on the minds of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. But, it actually felt more realistic after Charles Leclerc crashed into the barriers. This meant everyone got a chance to change to fresh hard tyres. With almost all drivers on the same tyres, it was about who could hold his nerve to snatch the podium.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen had already built a gap long enough to cement their places but it was everything to play for Sergio Perez and George Russell. A moment of alertness from George helped him pip Sergio Perez for that 3rd place. He was absolutely thrilled with that as he expressed in his hilarious debrief on the announcer during their flight back from France.

George Russell was delighted to beat Sergio Perez as he talked about his battle with the Mexican. He said, ‘I saw him struggling when Sainz got past and I had that one opportunity.’

“For me I was down the inside – the rules are pretty clear, from front wheel to rear wheel when you are on the inside.”

‘That’s what I had, and he didn’t really leave me much space but nevertheless, glad I could carry on bringing home P3, and two podiums for Mercedes, it’s great.’

Things are definitely getting better for Mercedes and if they continue with their good work, they might be able to snatch P2 from Ferrari at the end of the season.
