“We believe Mexico should be a one off,” Carlos Sainz isn’t worried about a similar disaster for the Scuderia at Interlagos
Carlos Sainz
Carlos Sainz and Ferrari had a sub optimal performance during the Mexico GP weekend where they just weren’t able to keep up with Mercedes and Red Bull. It was a tragedy for the Scuderia who has their goals set on finishing second in the constructors by beating Mercedes. Since both the championships are wrapping up, this is the best that the team can do.
With the season ending after the next two races, it will be a great time for Ferrari to shift their focus on 2023 and make sure to learn from their mistakes this year. Having started the season in style, things have turned to the bitter side pretty quickly for the Scuderia where Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have lost the championship to Max and Red Bull. The Bulls have already sealed both the titles ahead of the penultimate race of the year at Interlagos.
Coming into the Brazil GP weekend, Carlos Sainz was quick to assure the media that the performance levels in Mexico was just a one off occurrence. Clearly, the Ferrari driver wasn’t concerned about the performance being a recurring issue as seen in the interviews. While talking to Sky Sports in a press conference, here is what the Spaniard had to say about the situation.
Carlos Sainz is focused on finishing the season with good results
Here is what the Ferrari driver told the media. “We believe Mexico should be a one off. We’ve never been so far off the pace in the dry all year. We didn’t get it right. Now we focus on Brazil and Abu Dhabi, important races towards the end of the season. We want to get the pace back, fighting with Red Bull and Mercedes. A smooth weekend where we can prepare for next year,” he said.
While looking back at this dreadful season, Sainz further said this. “It’s been a challenging season. A challenging first third of the season where I struggled with the car balance and driving style. Didn’t suit me straight out of the box. Second two-thirds I’ve been happier with the car, and more on the pace but lots of DNFs and reliability issues.”
The Ferrari driver was not afraid to state that the team had a horrible second half. “Mercedes and Red Bull had a better second half of the season, even though I’m up to speed with the car and had a solid weekend in Mexico, maximum I could get was P5. A bit unfortunate, but I’ve learnt a lot. I am proud of the progress I’ve done with the engineers, the way we managed to turn my pace around. I will make sure next year we get back to the consistent Carlos of 2021,” Sainz said.
After all their misery, yet another year goes by where Ferrari could have won the title but just wasn’t able to. It makes you question where the problem lies in the team. Fans would pounce to blame it on the strategists but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a massive organisation like Ferrari. With the way that the drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc are treated outside by the fans also speaks volumes about the team’s dynamic.
