Two-time Le Mans 24 hours champion and Austrian former Formula One driver Alexander Wurz is requesting that the FIA look into why Guanyu Zhou’s roll hoop failed to function properly at Silverstone. The Alfa Romeo’s roll cage was entirely destroyed by the Chinese driver’s severe hit.

Zhou commended the halo for saving his life after a horrific crash at Silverstone. The halo did definitely save Zhou’s life, as can be seen in the collision video, but the roll hoop was also intended to be helpful. Instead, the roll hoop’s top has vanished entirely.

Wurz notes on Twitter that he can recall the last time a roll hoop wasn’t functional: “The last time (as far as I can remember) a roll hoop didn’t work was Pedro Diniz at the Nürburgring in ’99 (he jumped over me). This caused stricter testing, which was requested by the GPDA and implemented by the FIA.”

Dear Mr President, please check your inbox as we have more work to do,” concluded the former F1 driver in his tweet. The tweet includes two images that are clearly of the damaged F1 vehicles driven by Diniz and Zhou.

Meanwhile, Alfa Romeo’s team physio Josef Leberer is confident Guanyu Zhou will be fit and on the grid this weekend for the Austrian Grand Prix. “The relief was of course huge for everyone, especially since the first checks showed that he had not suffered any serious injuries. We almost couldn’t believe it,” said Leberer referring to the horrifying crash.
