‘We might be even more competitive’: Fernando Alonso hoping for Japanese GP to take place under wet conditions
Fernando Alonso
Fernando Alonso is likely driving for Alpine for the final time. This is his third stint for the French team, and it was at Renault where he won both his championships. He has lifted the team up with his driving and is continuing with it in the 2022 season. Alonso managed to get himself at P7 in the dry qualifying in Japan.
Japan is returning to the calendar after two years and the weather doesn’t seem to disappoint the crowd. With an expectation of rain for the main rain, this track could provide us with a lot of excitement. Fernando hopes for the same as he prepares himself for the fight with the McLaren tomorrow. Though he has the car to outperform McLaren, rain could surely add the spice everyone wants.
The Spaniard has a good track record in Suzuka and has won once here and once more at Fuji. Alonso is optimistic for Sunday: “I’m pleased to be starting seventh, and I think we might be even more competitive in wet conditions, so I’m hoping for the weather to be a bit mixed tomorrow.”
Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon to fight for P4 in the Constructor’s championship
Fernando Alonso managed a P7 and his teammate, Esteban Ocon managed a P5 in the Qualifying. Both Alpines look like they have some serious pace this weekend after their struggles in Singapore. They expect to turn the tables again on McLaren with a good performance on Race day.
Alonso further added, predicting that with rain the team might be in the top five: “If it’s a chaotic race, then we have a lot less to lose than the cars in front of us who are battling for the Championships. If there is some rain, we will stay focused and there is a possibility to be in the top five by the chequered flag.“
The Spaniard is also surprised at how close the teams are this weekend: “The car has felt great all weekend and I’m surprised about how close all of the teams are this weekend, with only a few tenths of a second separating a number of cars. If there is some rain, we will stay focused and there is a possibility to be in the top five by the chequered flag.”
With Max Verstappen on the verge of getting his second title at Suzuka, the fight for the fourth and fifth seems more interesting. Alpine was beaten in Singapore with a very well-finished race by McLaren. But the French team would love to get back at the British this time out in Japan.
