Mercedes had a weekend to forget in Belgium but with F1 moving to Zandvoort, the Brackley-based team has finally got a few reasons to smile ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix.

Mercedes managed a strong outing on Friday where its drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were able to put in stellar laps that were good enough to keep them in the upper half during FP1 and FP2 sessions.

However, despite positive signs, the team’s trackside engineering director, Andrew Shovlin has indicated that there are still things left on the table that needs attending.

While stressing about the Silver-Arrows Friday practice, Shovlin said, “The car has been a lot easier to balance here than in Spa and we look to be in a better place in terms of pace; we’re still missing a bit on single lap and long run but the gaps are a lot better than last week.”

After the first outing in Zandvoort, the Mercedes outfit is relieved after seeing that the gap to the top two teams is not as significant as it was in Spa.

Mercedes has gathered a lot of important data from the runs of Hamilton and Russell, and have indicated that the team has got a fair idea as to where they stand in terms of setup.

Shovlin further added, “Neither driver has the balance where they want it yet and both felt the car was a little easier to drive in the morning.”

In FP 1 Mercedes was 1 and 2 with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton but when it came to FP 2, the Maranello-based Ferrari team was able to turn up the heat.

Shovlin while discussing the afternoon session said, “In the afternoon, we were understeering in some places and lacking stability in others. Not major issues but ones we are going to need to put right overnight if we plan on giving Red Bull and Ferrari any trouble tomorrow.”

The Mercedes team has set its sights on giving Ferrari and Red Bull a run for their money, and given that, the team has sounded optimistic ahead of qualifying, the Dutch Grand Prix is shaping up to be a must-watch event.
