“We still have improvements to make,” Lewis Hamilton dissatisfied after losing out on a “best chance” for the Mercedes to win at the Mexico GP
Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton started the Mexico GP in P3 right behind his rival Max Verstappen on the pole. Mexico has one of the lengthiest straights on the calendar. Mercedes have lacked pace throughout the season and mostly that being on the straights. However, Red Bull has been very powerful on the throttle board taking out the maximum possibilities from the straights.
Hamilton easily took over George Russell for P2 at the start of the race but then lacked a lot behind Max Verstappen. He ultimately failed to get close to the fader Red Bull and ended his race 15 seconds behind the 2022 world champion. Hamilton himself agreed on the huge pace difference he had with Verstappen.
The race overall was one-sided and fans aren’t really happy with how boring Mexico went. Things would have been interesting with Hamilton at an equal pace. However, Hamilton was quite happy with the performance.
“I think so [Red Bull just too fast today]. When I was on the medium tyres there wasn’t any degradation when they pulled me in. Ultimately, we should have been on the soft, it is something that I asked… questioned,” said Hamilton.
Lewis Hamilton appreciates the new upgrade Mercedes brought out at Austin
Mercedes upgraded their front wing at Austin and hoped to get a noticeable upgrade with their W13. The wings did fail at Austin but were very handy in Mexico and Mercedes saw itself ahead of the Ferrari. A P2-P3 start in Qualifying, which they are poor at for the whole season, did bring them back.
Hamilton appreciated the work done on his car, “The upgrade really worked in the last race and we still have improvements to make, which we probably won’t make for the rest of the year, but we know where we need to improve for next year,” understands Hamilton.
The seven-time world champion also noticed the clear distance they had from Red Bull but only based on the strategies.” I thought maybe one of the two Mercedes should have had a soft to attack. When both Red Bulls took their tires off and had softs, I was shoot… so maybe a loss for us today, but good points.”
Mercedes are 40 points behind Ferrari and Russell still stays ahead of Carlos Sainz in the championship table. The silver arrows seem prepared for the next season to get themselves at the top of the table.
