Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez finished in second place after managing a great start and taking the lead in turn 1 from Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. He also got to a great position with a gap of more than 2 seconds from the second position. But things took a turn when Carlos Sainz got his car’s hydraulics failed and that brought the VSC out.

Sergio overused his tyre in the first lap creating a gap from Charles in the second place, but as the VSC was out he failed to make a stop for new tyres, whereas the Ferrari driver did manage to come out on the new hard tyres. As the race progressed Perez saw a reduction in his pace. With Max’s well-managed tyre strategy, the race winner passed his teammate for the lead.

“Unfortunately, we missed the VSC stop. There was some miscommunication and when we wanted it, it was a bit too late. We were a bit unlucky there because that would have made our race when we were leading,” Perez highlighted

Sergio Perez after the overtake Max did on him for the lead was told not to fight his teammate for the position, which he clearly followed at the moment. His views were on point when he was asked about the team strategy not allowing him to win, he explained it as a team decision and for the best result. Max was quicker than the Mexican when the orders were released, he also admitted the uncertainty the track has promised in the last few years and that could bring more troubles for him and the team as a whole.

“I think it was the right call from the team because at that point Max was further ahead and it is a good team result and you know here anything can happen. In the end its a 1-2 and a good team result,” said Sergio.

Max Verstappen as a result won the Baku Grand Prix with Sergio Perez in second making it the third 1-2 for Red Bull this season.
