“We will probably let him drive,” Mattia Binotto asserts Robert Shwartzman to test for Ferrari with a non-Russian license

Following Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, the FIA and F1 decided to ban all Russian and Belorussian drivers from participating in international Motorsport events. Formula One announced it had cancelled the licences of Russian GP. This has affected young Russian Drives who wish to participate in international racing events and aim to gain an entry in F1, like Ferrari Test driver Robert Shwartzman.

Robert Shwartzman is a 22-year-old, Israeli born Russian racing driver who competed in the FIA Formula 2 Championship. He won the 2019 FIA Formula 3 championship with Prema. He was signed by Prema Racing for the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship, partnering with the champion and current Haas driver Mick Schumacher.

Schwartzman’s hopes to drive in F1 have been halted due to the international sanctions on Russia. But Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto says the young driver will be given a chance to test for Ferrari in Free Practice with his Israeli license.

He tested for Ferrari along with current Haas driver Mick Schumacher and F2 driver Callum Illot in 2020 and 2021 and drove in the 2021 Young driver test with Haas. Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto says, they have not lost hopes in the Russian and he is still their driver.

Mattia Binotto said, “He has got an Israeli passport, and in terms of the license, it’s not a Russian one. He was in agreement as well with Russian companies that he interrupted his, let me say, any agreement he got with those companies. He is still our test driver and he will remain that. If we will have in the future any opportunities to let him drive, we will probably let him drive.”

According to new rules, all teams are now required to allow a young driver under the age of 22 to test in either of the two Friday practise sessions across the 2022 seasons. None of the teams in the 2022 grid has featured a young driver in the practice sessions so far.
