“We’re a long way off,” Lewis Hamilton reckons Mercedes are no way near the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari
Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton took off his W13 after a very bad Friday. Mercedes after the Fp 1 and FP2 are nowhere near the Red Bull and Ferrari. Things look a bit concerning for the British team as they planned to close the gap between the top teams. Mercedes ended their first half in a very strong manner closing the long-lost pace and getting near the Ferrari in points. They expected things to get much better from Spa and maybe the podium’s top step.
Lewis Hamilton ended up on the podium in the last five races with the best position of P2. But Fridays have often been a very close day for Mercedes with a continuous bad performance in the practices. Things eventually get well and better on Saturday and Sunday for the silver arrows. Lewis Hamilton is very well aware of the season stereotype and hopes for a better day tomorrow with his team working more and more for it.
“It doesn’t feel disastrous out there. It’s just we’re a long way off. But we often find this on Friday and things change a little bit more on Saturday. So I hope that that’s the case,” said Lewis.
George Russell on Mercedes’ pace as Ferrari and Red Bull are way ahead of them
George Russell also had an abysmal start to the Belgian GP with him not even finishing in the top 5 in FP2. Lewis was two positions ahead of the young Brit, though he managed a P4 in FP1, FP 2 had a bit of rain to spice things up.
Russell also understands the poor Friday to Podium story, Mercedes are having this season and sticks for better days ahead.“We’re pretty used to having bad Fridays. So let’s see if we can turn it around, but I don’t think there will be any guarantees we can find the performance step that we found in the last race, let’s say,” said George.
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are in for a fight with Ferrari for the second championship spot. With Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen starting behind the pack it’s a clear way for the silver arrows to fight for their first win this season and get a strong load of points for the future.
